In
the heart of Scotland lies the magnificent valley of the River
Dee. Rising high in the Cairngorm Mountains and running east
to its mouth at Aberdeen the river flows through some of Scotland's
finest scenery. Midway, in the shadow of Lochnagar mountain,
lies royal Balmoral Castle, summer home of the Royal Family.
Hence the name Royal Deeside.
So much is contained within this delightful glen. The west
lies within the new Cairngorms National Park while the east
comprises pleasant rolling farmland. For the active there
is a wide range of sporting pursuits and some great walks.
For animal lovers there is some fine wildlife and birds to
be seen. For the tourist there are many attractions all surrounded
by beautiful scenery. Shops, restaurants and accommodation
are amongst the best in Scotland.
Royal Deeside is rich with history. Here, for example, Macbeth
was defeated by Malcolm Canmore who later initiated games,
the direct descendent of which is the world famous Braemar
Gathering and Highland Games, held each September.
